Cycle Safety
Our thoughts go out to the family of the 4 cyclists bowled by a lady who drove straight through a group of cyclists whilst on her mobile phone in St Heliers Auckland on Saturday morning.
Cyclist critical after Tamaki Drive ‘carnage’
Its time for some real action to take place, enough talk. After discussing this briefly this morning, we’ve come up with the following quick hit list of idea’s – ones that can be implemented NOW and discussed later. How about putting safety first before consultation, just for once?
So here goes a few idea’s to spark some debate;
-Tamaki Drive Road Closure for 2+ hours on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
-40 km/hr speed limit along Tamaki Drive – AND enforced by police.
Perhaps dedicate a police patrol car for at least a month to make
visible stoppages and issuing of speed tickets for anything over 40
km/hr
-no parking on the seaward side of Tamaki Drive at all, or in the
mornings or ???
other idea’s;
-widening of main roads and bus lanes to safely accommodate cyclists.
-Removal of the stupid pedestrian islands everywhere that force cyclists further out into the road.
-stricter penalties for drivers hitting cyclists. In the USA, (I think Colorado or somewhere) they are proposing that in accidents involving cyclists and drivers – the drivers are presumed guilty unless proven otherwise, esp given
that almost all accidents involving cyclists & cars – cyclists come off far worse.

Here’s a great article;
The Myth of the Scofflaw Cyclist
Whenever you read an article about cycling in the city, or a discussion of transportation involving cycling it is highly likely that you’ll read a comment like these.
Also, TV3, amongst others, has a discussion here.
And as always, the crew on Vorb have some great points.
